You can call any phone number in the world from a browser tab, with no app, no SIM and no phone. A browser calling service such as LimePhone uses your computer's microphone and speakers, connects the call to the phone network, and shows your own number as the caller ID. Calls to the US, Canada and the UK come out of your plan minutes, and other countries are charged per minute, from $0.032 to Mexico and $0.0992 to Indian mobiles.
Key points
- Browser calling uses WebRTC, which is built into Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Nothing to install.
- You need an internet connection, a microphone and permission for the site to use it. A headset gives the other person much better sound.
- The person you call does not need any app. Their landline or mobile rings like a normal call.
- On LimePhone, every plan includes a US, UK or Canadian number, so the person sees a real number they can call back.
How does calling from a browser work?
When you press call, the browser sends your voice over the internet to the calling provider. The provider hands the call to a phone carrier in the destination country, which rings the number like any other call. On the way back, the other person's voice comes back the same route to your speakers.
The technology inside the browser is called WebRTC. It is the same thing that runs video calls in Google Meet, and every major browser has supported it for years, so a calling service can run in a tab with no plugin or download.
What do you need to make an international call from a browser?
- A browser: current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a laptop or desktop.
- A connection: any broadband or Wi-Fi connection. A voice call uses far less data than video, roughly 1 MB a minute or less.
- A microphone: the built-in one works. A wired or Bluetooth headset stops echo and background noise.
- An account with a calling service that connects to the phone network. Free browser apps only call other users of the same app.

Browser calling vs a calling app vs your mobile plan
- Your mobile plan: easy, but international rates on a standard US plan are usually far higher than internet calling, and roaming adds more on top.
- A calling app on your phone: works well, but needs installing, and most prepaid apps do not give you a number people can call you back on.
- A browser: nothing to install, works on a work laptop or a shared computer, and gives you a full keyboard for notes while you talk.

Tips for clear international calls
- Use a headset. Laptop speakers feed back into the microphone and the other person hears an echo.
- Close video calls and large downloads while you talk.
- If the sound breaks up on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or plug in a cable.
- Dial in international format: the country code, then the number without its leading zero.

Frequently asked questions
Can I call a landline or mobile from my browser?
Yes, with a service that connects to the phone network. LimePhone calls any landline or mobile from Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, and the other person does not need any app.
Is it free to call internationally from a browser?
Calls to other users of the same app can be free. Calls to real phone numbers always cost something, because a carrier has to connect them. On LimePhone, US, Canadian and UK calls are included in your plan minutes and other countries are charged per minute.
Do I need to download anything?
No. Browser calling runs on WebRTC, which is already built into every major browser. You only need to allow microphone access.
What number does the other person see?
On LimePhone they see your LimePhone number, a real US, UK or Canadian number, so they can call you back. Many free apps show an unknown or withheld number instead.
How much data does a browser call use?
Roughly 1 MB a minute or less for voice, so an hour-long call uses well under 100 MB.
Which browsers work?
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all support browser calling.
