Yes, you can make real phone calls over Wi-Fi without owning a phone. A laptop, desktop or tablet with a browser and a microphone is enough. An internet calling service such as LimePhone connects your call to the phone network, gives you a real number people can call back, and rings that number on your computer. Calls to the US, Canada and the UK use your plan minutes; international calls start at $0.032 a minute.
Key points
- This is not the same as "Wi-Fi calling" on a mobile phone, which still needs a phone and a SIM from your carrier.
- Internet calling needs only a Wi-Fi or wired connection, a browser and a microphone.
- To receive calls as well as make them, you need a phone number from the service. Every LimePhone plan includes a US, UK or Canadian number.
- A headset and a steady connection matter more than connection speed. A voice call uses about 1 MB a minute or less.
Wi-Fi calling vs internet calling: what is the difference?
Wi-Fi calling is a feature of your mobile carrier. Your phone sends calls over Wi-Fi instead of the cell tower, but it still uses your SIM, your mobile number and your mobile plan. Without a phone and a SIM, it does nothing. We explain it in more detail in what is Wi-Fi calling.
Internet calling, also called VoIP, does not involve a mobile carrier on your side at all. The calling service gives you a number and connects your calls to the phone network itself, so any device with a microphone and an internet connection can make and take calls.
| Wi-Fi calling | Internet calling (VoIP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a mobile phone | Yes | No; a laptop or tablet works |
| Needs a SIM card | Yes | No |
| Your number | Your mobile number | A number from the calling service |
| Who bills the call | Your mobile carrier | The calling service |
| Works on a computer | No | Yes, in a browser |
What you need to call without a phone
- A laptop, desktop or tablet.
- Wi-Fi or a wired connection.
- A current browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- A microphone and speakers, ideally a headset.
- An account with a calling service that connects to real phone numbers.
How to make a call over Wi-Fi with LimePhone
- Start a free trial and choose a US, UK or Canadian number on the number checker.
- Sign in to the dashboard in your browser and allow microphone access.
- Type the number in the dialer, with the country selected, and press call.
- Incoming calls to your number ring in the same browser tab while you are signed in, and go to voicemail when you are not.
Can people call me back if I have no phone?
Only if your calling service gives you a number. Free apps such as WhatsApp and Messenger only reach people who use the same app, and some calling apps dial out from an unknown number that cannot be called back.
With LimePhone, your number rings in the browser, voicemail is transcribed so you can read missed calls, and texts arrive in the same inbox. If you later get a phone, the Android app uses the same number.
What it costs
Plans start at $9 a month with one number, unlimited incoming calls and texts, and 2,000 outbound minutes for calls to the US, Canada and the UK. Calls to other countries are charged per minute; see the rates page for every destination and pricing for the plans.
How we checked

Frequently asked questions
Can I make phone calls on a laptop using Wi-Fi?
Yes. With an internet calling service such as LimePhone, you can call any landline or mobile from your laptop's browser over Wi-Fi, without a phone or a SIM.
Is Wi-Fi calling the same as calling without a phone?
No. Wi-Fi calling is a mobile carrier feature that still needs your phone and SIM. Calling without a phone uses an internet calling service on a computer instead.
Do I need a phone number to call over Wi-Fi?
You can dial out without one on some apps, but the other person may see an unknown number and cannot call you back. A service that gives you a number, as LimePhone does on every plan, lets people reach you.
Can I receive calls on my computer?
Yes. Calls to your LimePhone number ring in your browser while you are signed in. Missed calls go to voicemail with a written transcription.
Can I call emergency services this way?
Do not rely on an internet calling service for emergency calls. Keep a mobile or landline available for emergencies.
How much internet speed do I need?
Very little. A voice call uses about 1 MB a minute or less. A stable connection matters more than a fast one.
