How to Add a Phone Number to Shopify (Step by Step)

Add a business phone number to your Shopify store, show it in the header, footer and contact page, and make it click-to-call. Shopify has no phone line.

To add a phone number to your Shopify store, enter it as the store's contact phone in Settings, then show it on the storefront with the theme editor. Shopify stores your number but does not provide one, and it does not answer calls. Use a dedicated business number that rings your team and takes voicemail, rather than a personal mobile. LimePhone includes a US, UK or Canadian number on every plan from $9 a month, and it works alongside Shopify with no app to install.

Key points

 • Shopify has no built-in phone system. You bring your own number.
 • Settings holds the store's contact details; the theme editor controls where the number appears on your storefront.
 • Use a click-to-call link (tel:) so mobile shoppers can tap it.
 • Decide who answers before you publish the number. Unanswered calls cost more trust than no number.

Step 1: get a business number

Use a number you can share with staff and keep if people change roles. A local number suits a store with a strong home region; a toll-free number suits a national brand. Check availability on the number checker.

Step 2: add the number to your store details

 1. In Shopify admin, open Settings.
 2. Open the store details section (labelled General or Store details, depending on your admin version).
 3. Enter the number in the store phone field and save.

Shopify uses these details in places such as notifications and policies. They do not automatically show on your theme.

Step 3: show the number on your storefront

 1. Go to Online Store > Themes and click Customize.
 2. Add the number to the announcement bar or header, for example "Questions? Call (555) 123-4567".
 3. Add it to the footer with your hours.
 4. Add it to your Contact page: edit the page under Online Store > Pages.

Theme settings differ between themes. If your theme has no phone field, use a text block or a custom Liquid section.

Step 4: make it click-to-call

In a link field or rich-text block, link the number to tel: followed by the number in international format, for example tel:+15551234567. In a custom Liquid section:

Call (555) 123-4567

Step 5: make sure calls get answered

 • Ring several staff at once, in the browser and on mobile.
 • Set store hours and a voicemail greeting for out-of-hours calls.
 • Read voicemail as text and reply by SMS from the same number. Shoppers often prefer a text about an order.
 • Keep order details to hand: customers will quote an order number, so have the Shopify admin open while you take calls.

Should you collect customers' phone numbers at checkout?

Shopify's checkout settings let you make the shipping phone number required, optional or hidden. Asking for it helps couriers and lets you text about delivery problems. If you plan to send marketing texts, you need the customer's separate SMS consent.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a phone number to my Shopify store?

Enter it in Settings under your store details, then show it in your theme's header or announcement bar, footer and Contact page with the theme editor.

Does Shopify give you a phone number?

No. Shopify does not provide a phone line. Use a business number from a phone service such as LimePhone.

How do I make my Shopify phone number clickable?

Link it to tel: and the number in international format, for example tel:+15551234567.

Yes, if your phone service supports SMS. LimePhone plans include outbound texts and unlimited incoming texts on the same number.
