Toll-free numbers are designed to be free only inside their own country, so most of them either cannot be reached from abroad or charge you full international rates. This applies to US 1-800 numbers, UK 0800 and 0808 numbers, Australian 1800 numbers and toll-free numbers almost everywhere. The practical fix is to call from a number in that country over the internet, which makes the call look local to the toll-free line.
Key points
- Toll-free numbers are paid for by the business, which usually restricts them to callers in its own country.
- From abroad, expect a failed call, a recorded message or an international charge.
- Look for an alternative geographic number first; banks, airlines and government agencies usually publish one.
- LimePhone gives you a US, UK or Canadian number, so you can call toll-free numbers in those countries over the internet from anywhere.

Why toll-free numbers block foreign callers
The business that owns a toll-free number pays a per-minute charge for every call it receives. Calls from other countries cost the business more, so most choose to accept only domestic callers. Your carrier abroad may also refuse to route the call, because there is no international equivalent of "free to the caller".
Four ways to reach a toll-free number from abroad
- Use the geographic or international number. Most organisations list one on their website, often under "calling from abroad".
- Call from a local number over the internet. With LimePhone, a US, UK or Canadian number lets you dial that country's toll-free numbers from a browser or the Android app, as if you were there.
- Use chat, email or a callback form if the company offers one.
- Try dialing in international format. It sometimes works, but you will pay your carrier's international rate.
Which countries LimePhone covers
Every LimePhone plan includes one US, UK or Canadian number, and calls to those three countries use your plan minutes. That covers toll-free numbers in the US and Canada, and UK numbers including 0800 and 0808 in most cases. For other countries, use the organisation's geographic number and call it at the per-minute rate on the rates page.
For US 1-800 numbers specifically, see how to call a US 1-800 number from outside the US.
How we checked
LimePhone prices and per-minute rates in this article come from the live LimePhone rate table and plan list, checked on October 24, 2026. Rates change; the current figures are always on the rates page and pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you call toll-free numbers internationally?
Usually not for free, and often not at all. Most toll-free numbers only accept calls from their own country. Calling from a local number in that country over the internet is the reliable workaround.
Can I call a UK 0800 number from abroad?
Many UK 0800 numbers do not accept international calls. Use the organisation's 01, 02 or 03 number, or call from a UK number over the internet.
Is calling a toll-free number from abroad expensive?
If it connects, you pay your carrier's international rate, which can be high from a mobile. Calling over the internet from a number in that country avoids the international charge.
Why does my call to a toll-free number fail abroad?
The number owner has restricted it to domestic callers, or your carrier does not route international calls to toll-free ranges.
