Many US 1-800 numbers cannot be dialed from outside the US, and the ones that can are not free from abroad. Toll-free numbers are paid for by the business, which usually only accepts calls from the US and sometimes Canada. The reliable workaround is to call from a US number over the internet: with an internet phone service such as LimePhone, the call starts inside the US, so the toll-free number treats it like any domestic call, and it uses your plan minutes rather than an international rate.
Key points
- US toll-free prefixes are 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 and 888.
- From abroad, a 1-800 call may fail with a recorded message, ring with no answer, or be charged at the international rate.
- Many companies publish a separate number for international callers. Check the "contact us" page or the back of your card first.
- Calling from a US number over the internet avoids the block, because the call reaches the toll-free number from inside the US.
Why 1-800 numbers do not work from abroad
With a toll-free number, the business pays for the call instead of the caller. To control that cost, most businesses choose to accept calls only from the US, or from the US and Canada. A call arriving from another country's network is either rejected or never routed to the business at all.
When a 1-800 number does accept international calls, you pay your own international rate to reach it. "Toll-free" only means free inside the area the business pays for.
How to call a US 1-800 number from outside the US
- Look for an international number. Banks, airlines, card issuers and insurers often list a separate number for overseas callers, sometimes one that accepts collect calls.
- Try dialing it directly: your exit code, then 1, then the 10-digit number, for example 00 1 800 555 0100 from most of Europe. Expect it to fail for many businesses.
- Call from a US number over the internet. Sign in to a service such as LimePhone in your browser or on Android, choose the United States in the dialer, and dial the toll-free number as you would in the US.
- Use the company's chat or callback if it offers one. Some businesses will call you back on a number you give them.
| Method | Works from abroad | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Dial the 1-800 number directly | Often blocked | Your carrier's international rate |
| The company's international number | Yes, if published | International rate, or free if it takes collect calls |
| A US number over the internet (LimePhone) | Yes, the call starts in the US | Plan minutes, no extra charge |
| Chat or callback | Yes, if offered | Free |
What it costs on LimePhone
A call to a US toll-free number is a US call, so it uses the outbound minutes in your plan: 2,000 a month on Lite, 5,000 on Starter and 10,000 on Growth. Being on hold for an hour with an airline uses 60 of those minutes and costs nothing extra. Plans start at $9 a month; see pricing.
Calling 1-800 numbers from Canada and Mexico
Canada shares the North American Numbering Plan with the US, so many 1-800 numbers accept calls from Canada, though not all. From Mexico and the Caribbean, access varies by business and carrier. If a number fails, use the company's international number or call from a US number over the internet.

Frequently asked questions
Can I call a 1-800 number from outside the US?
Sometimes. Many US toll-free numbers block calls from abroad, and the ones that accept them charge you international rates. Calling from a US number over the internet usually gets through.
Is a 1-800 number free from another country?
No. A toll-free number is only free inside the area the business pays for, normally the US and sometimes Canada.
How do I dial a US toll-free number from the UK?
Dial 00 1 and the 10-digit number, for example 00 1 800 555 0100. If it fails, call from a US number over the internet or use the company's international number.
Why do I hear "this number cannot be reached from your calling area"?
The business has chosen not to accept calls from your country on that toll-free number. Calling from a US number avoids the restriction.
Does LimePhone charge for 1-800 calls?
Calls to US numbers, including toll-free numbers, use your plan's outbound minutes. There is no separate per-minute charge.
